Guia Lighthouse

The Guia Lighthouse was completed in 1865, making it the first Western-style lighthouse built on the China coast or in East Asia. It was constructed to help guide ships navigating the busy shipping lanes near the Pearl River Delta. Today, it stands proudly on Guia Hill in Macau and remains an important historical monument.

While the Guia Lighthouse is generally closed to the public for daily interior tours, it occasionally opens for special events or specific visiting days. However, visitors can freely walk around its exterior and the surrounding Guia Fortress. The site offers panoramic views of the Macau peninsula and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Historic Centre of Macau.

To reach the Guia Lighthouse, visitors can take a short ride on the Guia Cable Car, which is the shortest funicular in the world. Alternatively, you can hike up the well-paved walking trails that wind through the lush Guia Hill. The cable car operates daily and provides easy access to the lighthouse, chapel, and flak towers at the summit.

The Guia Lighthouse was designed and built by a local Portuguese resident named Carlos Vicente da Rocha, a native of Macau. Construction began in 1864 and was officially completed the following year in September 1865. The structure stands about 15 meters tall and its light was originally visible for up to 20 miles in clear weather.
