Pétrus

Petrus comes from Pomerol on Bordeaux's Right Bank, not from the classified Left Bank communes like Pauillac or Margaux. It is famous for Merlot grown on distinctive clay-rich soils around the Petrus estate.

Modern Petrus is generally produced entirely from Merlot, unlike many Bordeaux blends that include Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Franc. That Merlot focus is central to its dense texture, plum character, and long aging reputation.

Production is tiny compared with major Bordeaux chateaux, often around 30,000 bottles per year depending on vintage. High demand, low supply, and famous vintages such as 1982 and 2000 push prices into thousands of dollars per bottle.

Provenance matters because Petrus is heavily counterfeited and expensive. Buyers usually look for a trusted merchant, original capsule and label condition, and storage history, especially for older Bordeaux vintages.
