description James Nasmyth Overview

James Nasmyth (1808–1890) was a Scottish engineer and inventor best known for inventing the steam hammer, which he patented in 1842 and which enabled controlled forging of large iron and steel components for the Industrial Revolution. He founded the Bridgewater Foundry in Manchester in 1836, where he manufactured machine tools and engineering equipment. In later life, he devoted himself to astronomy, co-authoring "The Moon: Considered as a Planet, a World, and a Satellite" (1874) with James Carpenter and producing detailed drawings and photographs of lunar features.
