Narwhal

The narwhal's distinctive elongated spiral tusk is actually an overgrown left canine tooth that can reach up to three meters in length, primarily in males. Scientists believe the tusk is heavily innervated to sense changes in the environment, and is also used for mating displays.

Narwhals are medium-sized Arctic toothed whales that inhabit the icy waters of the Arctic Atlantic and Russian regions. They are specifically adapted to living among the heavy sea ice pack of countries like Canada and Greenland.

Narwhals thrive in environments heavily covered by sea ice, relying on their ability to dive deep to find food like Greenland halibut. They use high-frequency clicking sounds for echolocation to navigate narrow ice leads and locate breathing holes.

While the tusk is primarily a male characteristic, a small percentage of female narwhals do occasionally grow a smaller tusk. Males predominantly use these long tusks in behavioral displays, occasionally engaging in "tusking" where they rub their tusks together.
