Andrei Gromyko was a Soviet diplomat who served as the USSR's minister of foreign affairs from 1957 to 1985, spanning much of the Cold War. He represented the Soviet Union at major wartime and postwar negotiations and was its permanent representative to the United Nations from 1946 to 1948. Western counterparts called him "Mr. Nyet" because of his frequent opposition to their proposals and his use of the Soviet veto.
