description Poverty Point Overview

Poverty Point is a Late Archaic archaeological complex in northeastern Louisiana, United States, built between about 1700 and 1100 BCE by communities associated with the Poverty Point culture. The site includes six concentric semi-elliptical earthen ridges, a central plaza, and several mounds, including the large Mound A. Its scale and design provide evidence of coordinated construction, long-distance exchange, and complex social organization among pre-agricultural hunter-fisher-gatherer communities.
