Tamanrasset Oasis

Tamanrasset is the capital of Tamanrasset Province in southern Algeria. It is the main urban center of the Tuareg Ahaggar region.

The city is a major stop on the trans-Saharan highway linking routes across North and West Africa. Its position makes it an important service and transport center in the southern Algerian Sahara.

Tamanrasset is closely associated with the Tuareg communities and the Ahaggar mountains. The city serves as an urban gateway to that wider cultural and desert region.

Tamanrasset is a city and provincial capital, although it is described as an oasis because of its desert setting and water-supported settlement. It is much larger and more urban than a small isolated oasis settlement.
