August Wilhelm von Hofmann (1818–1892) was a German chemist who studied under Justus von Liebig and directed the Royal College of Chemistry in London from 1845 to 1865 before returning to Berlin. He was central to the development of the aniline dye industry through his research on coal-tar derivatives, and his student William Perkin discovered mauveine, the first synthetic dye. Hofmann described the rearrangement of primary amides to amines with loss of carbon dioxide, the Hofmann elimination of quaternary ammonium salts, and first isolated formaldehyde. He co-founded the German Chemical Society in 1868 and served as its president.
