Jason and the Golden Fleece

Jason is a foundational hero from ancient Greece who quests for the Golden Fleece to reclaim his rightful throne from his uncle Pelias. To achieve this, he sails aboard the ship Argo with a crew of legendary heroes. This famous crew is collectively known as the Argonauts.

Jason and his crew of Argonauts sailed to Colchis, an ancient kingdom located on the edge of the Black Sea. In Greek mythology, the magical Golden Fleece was guarded there by a never-sleeping dragon. The journey to Colchis was fraught with mythical monsters and divine challenges.

In the myth, Jason could not complete his quest without the crucial help of Medea, a powerful sorceress and the daughter of the King of Colchis. She used her magic to put the guarding dragon to sleep and provided him with the means to complete impossible tasks. Their alliance is a central element of the legend.

The ship Argo carried a crew of the greatest heroes in Greek mythology. Famous Argonauts included the mighty Heracles, the divine musician Orpheus, and the twins Castor and Pollux. The gathering of these heroes represents one of the earliest examples of a superhero team in Western literature.
