Famen Temple Pagoda

When the underground crypt was opened in 1987 after the Ming dynasty structure began to collapse, archaeologists discovered a finger-bone relic of the Buddha. Alongside this sacred relic, the crypt contained thousands of rare Tang dynasty imperial offerings. These included gold, silver, and exquisite silk textiles that had been sealed away for centuries.

While the original temple dates back much earlier, the Ming dynasty pagoda that visitors recognize today was built during the 16th century. This octagonal, thirteen-story brick tower suffered severe damage and began collapsing in the 1980s. This structural failure is what ultimately led to the groundbreaking 1987 archaeological excavation of its underground palace.

The Famen Temple Pagoda is located in Fufeng County, which is part of Baoji City in Shaanxi Province, China. It sits roughly 120 kilometers west of the provincial capital, Xi'an. The site remains one of the most significant Buddhist pilgrimage destinations in the world due to the authentic relics found there.

The current pagoda is an imposing brick structure built during the Ming dynasty in an octagonal shape, which contrasts with earlier square-base pagoda designs. It was specifically designed to safely house sacred relics within an elaborate underground crypt. Today, the restored structure serves as a prominent historical landmark representing medieval Chinese Buddhist architecture.
