Neobuxbaumia tetetzo

This large columnar cactus can reach staggering heights exceeding 15 meters, making it one of the dominant vertical features of its landscape. As it matures, it develops a distinct, branching crown similar to a candelabra. Its immense height allows it to tower over the surrounding desert scrub.

This cactus is strictly endemic to the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley, located in the states of Puebla and Oaxaca in Mexico. It is a defining species of this specific arid ecosystem. The valley is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its unique biodiversity.

It produces large, nocturnal tubular flowers that open at night to attract its primary pollinators: bats. The white, bell-shaped blossoms emit strong fragrances and produce nectar specifically tailored to the bats' feeding habits. Bats navigate through the dark to feed and inadvertently transfer pollen between the giant cacti.

Because it can grow over 15 meters tall and requires vast amounts of direct, intense sunlight, it is highly unsuitable for typical indoor cultivation. It is generally restricted to botanical gardens and specialized arid-climate landscaping. Growing it from seed requires a hot, dry environment and takes decades to reach maturity.
