Birtwistle - The Mask of Orpheus

Birtwistle separates the hero into different manifestations, including a singer, a mime, and a puppet. This makes identity and memory visible onstage instead of presenting Orpheus as one psychologically continuous character.

The Mask of Orpheus revisits events from different viewpoints and allows past, present, and imagined versions of the myth to coexist. Familiar episodes such as Eurydice's death and Orpheus's descent are therefore repeated or reframed rather than narrated once.

Electronic interludes form an essential layer of the score alongside singers and orchestra. The electronic material was created with Barry Anderson and helps distinguish ritual, memory, and supernatural spaces within the opera.

Peter Zinovieff wrote the libretto for Birtwistle's three-act opera. English National Opera premiered it at the London Coliseum in 1986, with a production that matched the score's complex use of masks, mime, puppetry, and electronics.
