Robert Fogel was an American economist and economic historian who helped establish cliometrics, the systematic use of economic theory and quantitative evidence in historical research. He shared the 1993 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences with Douglass North. His studies examined subjects including the economic importance of railroads, slavery in the United States, and long-term changes in health and mortality.
