Sugarcane Borer Moth

description Sugarcane Borer Moth Overview

The sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis, is a moth in the family Crambidae whose larvae tunnel into the stems of sugarcane, maize, sorghum, and rice. Native to the Americas, it ranges from the southern United States through the Caribbean and South America and is among the most damaging pests of sugarcane, reducing sugar content and weakening stalks. Control relies heavily on parasitoid wasps such as Cotesia flavipes and on resistant plant varieties.
