Chilo suppressalis, the Asiatic rice stem borer, is a moth in the family Crambidae first described by Francis Walker in 1863. Its larvae tunnel into the stems of rice and other grasses, feeding on internal tissues and causing the 'dead heart' symptoms that kill young tillers and the white, empty panicles known as whiteheads in older plants. The species is among the most damaging insect pests of rice in Asia, and it also occurs in the Middle East and southern Europe.
