James Pennebaker

Pennebaker developed the expressive writing paradigm in the 1980s, in which participants write about traumatic or emotionally significant experiences for 15-20 minutes over several consecutive days. His studies found measurable improvements in physical health outcomes, including immune function and fewer physician visits, among participants who engaged in expressive writing.

LIWC (Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count) is a text analysis program developed by Pennebaker and colleagues that categorizes words into psychological dimensions such as emotion, cognitive processes, and social relationships. The tool has been widely used in research on language, personality, and social dynamics.

Through LIWC analysis, Pennebaker found that patterns of pronoun use, particularly the frequency of first-person singular pronouns like 'I,' correlate with emotional states, social status, and deception. His research showed that people in positions of power tend to use fewer first-person pronouns and more second- and third-person pronouns.

Pennebaker is a professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin, where he has conducted research for decades. He served as chair of the psychology department and has received numerous awards for his contributions to social and health psychology.
