Francine Shapiro was an American psychologist who developed Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, commonly known as EMDR, after observations she reported making in 1987. EMDR is a structured psychotherapy in which patients recall distressing experiences while attending to bilateral stimulation, often guided eye movements. The method became especially associated with the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder and generated extensive clinical research as well as debate about how its therapeutic effects should be explained.
