Polyporus squamosus, commonly called dryad's saddle or pheasant back, is a large bracket fungus that grows mainly on dead or weakened hardwood trees. Its fan-shaped caps have pale brown scales arranged over a lighter background, and fresh specimens are noted for a cucumber-like smell. The species is widely recorded in temperate regions, and young, tender fruiting bodies are sometimes collected as an edible mushroom, although older specimens become tough.
