Euboic Gulf

The Euboic Gulf is the elongated body of water separating the Greek island of Euboea from the mainland regions of Attica and Central Greece (Boeotia). It is divided into a northern section and a southern section connected by the narrow Euripus Strait at Chalcis.

The Euripus Strait is the narrow channel at Chalcis that links the northern and southern Euboic Gulf. It is renowned for its powerful and unpredictable tidal currents, which can reverse direction multiple times per day and reach speeds that challenge small vessels.

According to ancient sources, Aristotle was fascinated by the unusual tidal behavior of the Euripus Strait and studied it late in his life. Some ancient accounts even claim he died at Chalcis, though the details of his involvement with the strait remain debated among scholars.

The city of Chalcis sits directly on the Euripus Strait connecting the two halves of the gulf, and is the largest urban center on Euboea. Other towns line both the island coast and the mainland shore, reflecting the gulf's long history as a maritime corridor.
