Salamis Necropolis

The Salamis Necropolis is located west of the ancient city of Salamis on the eastern coast of Cyprus, near the modern city of Famagusta. It is part of the broader archaeological site of ancient Salamis, one of the most important city-kingdoms of ancient Cyprus.

The necropolis contains royal tombs dating from the 8th century BC to the Hellenistic period, many of which yielded chariots, horses, and elaborate Near Eastern grave goods. Some of the richest burials included imported bronze and ivory objects reflecting Salamis's trade connections with Phoenicia and Assyria.

The royal tombs at Salamis were extensively excavated by the French Archaeological Mission led by Jean Pouilloux starting in the mid-20th century. Earlier investigations at the site date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries under British colonial administration.

The ancient site of Salamis, including parts of the necropolis area, is open to visitors as a major archaeological park in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. However, access may be affected by the political situation in Cyprus, since the site is in the internationally unrecognized northern zone.
