Augustin-Jean Fresnel

Augustin-Jean Fresnel is best known for inventing the Fresnel lens, a compact, multi-part lens design originally developed for lighthouses. This invention allowed lighthouses to project light over much greater distances, drastically improving maritime safety. His design is still used today in various applications, from overhead projectors to traffic lights.

Fresnel's research in the early 19th century provided foundational support for the wave theory of light.
