DIY Paver Patio

The required depth depends on the paver and base thickness, but pedestrian patios commonly need several inches of compacted aggregate beneath about 1 inch of bedding sand. Include the paver thickness in the calculation so the finished surface meets the surrounding grade.

A common target is about 1/4 inch of fall per foot, directed away from the house. Establish that slope in the excavated soil and compacted base rather than trying to create it only with bedding sand.

Laying them directly on soil usually leads to settling, weeds, and uneven edges. A compacted crushed-stone base, a thin bedding layer, and edge restraints create a much more stable patio.

Sweep it into completely dry joints after the pavers are laid and compacted. Remove all dust from the paver faces before lightly activating the sand with water, because leftover material can harden into a haze.
