Does the original Philips Hue Lightstrip need a Hue Bridge?
Yes — the original lightstrip (released around 2013) requires the Hue Bridge for control, since it predates the Bluetooth connectivity that later Lightstrip Plus hardware versions added. Without a Bridge you lose the full app, scenes, and away-from-home control.
Can the original Hue Lightstrip be cut or extended?
Yes — you can cut it to size at the marked cut lines, and extend it with 1-meter extension strips, typically up to around 10 meters total from the 2-meter base. Cut-off sections can't be reused without soldering or connectors.
What's the difference between the original Hue Lightstrip and the Play Gradient lightstrip?
The original (and Lightstrip Plus) can only display a single color at any moment along the whole strip. The Play Gradient line has multiple addressable color zones, which is what enables the multi-color gradient effects — including the TV-mounted Gradient strips that sync with on-screen content.
