description Virginian EL-C Overview

The Virginian EL-C was a class of ignitron rectifier electric locomotives built by General Electric in 1956 for the Virginian Railway. Utilizing solid-state mercury-arc rectifiers to convert alternating current from overhead lines into direct current for its traction motors, they were highly efficient for their time. They were primarily used to haul heavy coal trains over the Virginian's electrified main line in Virginia and West Virginia.
