The Coriolis force is a fictitious force introduced to describe the apparent deflection of moving objects when observed within a rotating reference frame, such as Earth. Does the Coriolis force determine which way water drains from a sink?

Not under ordinary household conditions. The Coriolis effect is far weaker than the influence of the basin's shape, residual water motion, and the way the plug is removed, although it can affect carefully controlled experiments over longer timescales.

Why do hurricanes rotate in opposite directions across the equator?

Earth's rotation deflects large-scale moving air to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere. Combined with air flowing toward low pressure, this contributes to counterclockwise tropical cyclones in the north and clockwise ones in the south.

Is the Coriolis force a real force or only an apparent one?

It is an apparent, or inertial, force introduced when motion is described from a rotating reference frame. An observer outside that rotating frame can explain the same path through inertia without adding a physical sideways interaction.

Why is the Coriolis effect zero at the equator?

For horizontal motion, the relevant Coriolis parameter depends on latitude and becomes zero at the equator. Its magnitude increases toward the poles, which is why latitude matters in atmospheric and oceanographic models.
