Wimmen's Comix

The first issue of *Wimmen's Comix* was published in 1972 by the San Francisco-based publisher Last Gasp. It was founded by a collective of female artists, including Trina Robbins, Lee Marrs, and Michele Brand. The anthology was created specifically to provide a platform for women in the male-dominated underground comix scene.

The series ran for 20 years, concluding with its 17th and final issue in 1992. Throughout its run, it served as an incubator for multiple generations of female cartoonists. The anthology provided a space for experimental art styles and diverse feminist perspectives that were largely ignored by mainstream publishers.

The collective aimed to combat the sexist and misogynistic themes prevalent in the underground comix movement of the 1960s and 70s. They sought to publish stories that authentically represented women's experiences, ranging from everyday life and sexuality to political commentary. The project is considered a vital precursor to the modern feminist graphic novel movement.

Beyond the founders, *Wimmen's Comix* featured early works from prominent artists such as Alison Bechdel, Aline Kominsky-Crumb, and Carol Tyler. It also included contributions from notable underground figures like Diane Noomin and Roberta Gregory. These artists went on to achieve significant acclaim in alternative comics and graphic literature.
