Kaiser Wilhelm II

description Kaiser Wilhelm II Overview

Wilhelm II (1859–1941) was the last German Emperor and King of Prussia, reigning from 1888 until his abdication in November 1918. A grandson of Britain's Queen Victoria, he dismissed Chancellor Otto von Bismarck in 1890 and pursued an aggressive 'Weltpolitik' of naval expansion and colonial rivalry that strained relations with other powers. His backing of Austria-Hungary after the June 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand contributed to the outbreak of the First World War. As the war turned against Germany he was sidelined by the military high command, and after defeat he abdicated and lived in exile in the Netherlands until his death.
