Southern Flannel Moth

description Southern Flannel Moth Overview

The southern flannel moth, Megalopyge opercularis, is a moth native to the southeastern and southern United States. Its adult form is covered with soft-looking scales, while its larva is commonly called the puss caterpillar or asp caterpillar. Hidden urticating hairs on the larva can inject irritating substances when touched, producing a painful sting and other reactions, so the caterpillar is medically significant despite its furry appearance.
