Heinrich Schliemann was a German businessman and amateur archaeologist who conducted major excavations at Hisarlik in present-day Turkey during the 1870s. He identified the site with ancient Troy, a city known from the poems attributed to Homer, and also worked at Mycenae and Tiryns in Greece. Later archaeology showed that Hisarlik contained several successive settlements and that Schliemann's methods damaged important layers.
