Brazilian Red and White Tarantula (Nhandu chromatus)

Nhandu chromatus is a large terrestrial tarantula, with adult specimens reaching leg spans of around 6 to 7 inches. Females tend to be larger and longer-lived than males, which is typical for many New World tarantula species.

Nhandu chromatus can be fairly defensive and is known for kicking urticating hairs from its abdomen when disturbed. This defensive behavior, combined with its potential speed, means it is generally recommended for keepers with some prior tarantula experience rather than absolute beginners.

In captivity, Nhandu chromatus feeds primarily on live insects such as crickets, dubia roaches, and locusts. In the wild, terrestrial tarantulas like this species ambush passing prey, which can include a variety of insects and other small invertebrates.

Nhandu chromatus has a dark body with contrasting pale bands on its legs and reddish hairs on its abdomen. The combination of dark coloration, striped legs, and red abdominal setae gives the species its common name.
