High Plains (USA)

description High Plains (USA) Overview

The High Plains are the elevated western portion of the Great Plains in the United States, extending across parts of several states from South Dakota and Wyoming southward to Texas and New Mexico. The region is generally semiarid, comparatively level, and characterized by grasslands, agriculture, ranching, and strong climatic variability. Much of it overlies the Ogallala Aquifer, whose groundwater supports extensive irrigation but is being depleted in many areas faster than natural recharge can replace it.
