description ROLI Seaboard RISE 2 Overview
Instead of separate moving piano keys, the ROLI Seaboard RISE 2 offers 49 keywaves on a soft, continuous playing surface. Finger pressure and movement can alter the character of a note after it begins, while sideways gestures allow pitch bends across the surface. This makes the instrument a MIDI controller for expressive performance rather than a conventional keyboard with an unusual appearance.
Compatible software or hardware supplies the actual sound. MIDI Polyphonic Expression, or MPE, allows individual notes in a chord to receive separate expressive control. Producers and composers can use that behavior with suitable synthesizers or samplers to shape phrases in ways that ordinary shared pitch and modulation controls cannot. Its defining appeal is detailed touch-based sound control.
The playing technique also requires adjustment, making it most relevant to musicians interested in learning gestures beyond familiar keyboard technique.
help ROLI Seaboard RISE 2 FAQ
What software comes bundled with the ROLI Seaboard RISE 2?
The RISE 2 typically comes bundled with ROLI's Equator2 software, which is specifically designed to handle its multidimensional polyphonic expression (MPE) capabilities. It also includes Tracktion Waveform to help users start producing music right out of the box.
How does the keywave surface on the ROLI Seaboard RISE 2 work?
Instead of traditional piano keys, the RISE 2 uses a soft, continuous silicone keywave surface that responds to five dimensions of touch: strike, press, glide, slide, and lift. This allows musicians to bend pitches and manipulate sounds simply by moving their fingers across the wave-like surface.
Is the ROLI Seaboard RISE 2 compatible with standard MIDI plugins?
Yes, it works as a standard MIDI controller over USB or Bluetooth, but to get the full expressive benefit, your software must support MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression). Older standard MIDI plugins will only respond to basic velocity data, ignoring the pitch bend and pressure nuances.
Can I use the ROLI Seaboard RISE 2 wirelessly?
Yes, the ROLI Seaboard RISE 2 features built-in Bluetooth MIDI connectivity, allowing you to play it completely wirelessly. This makes it highly portable and easy to connect to iPads or laptops without needing a dedicated MIDI interface.
