Khan el-Khalili

The famous souk was established in the 14th century, tracing its roots directly back to the Mamluk era of Egypt. It was originally built on the site of an ancient burial ground for the city's elite. Today, it remains one of the oldest continuously operating markets in the entire Middle East.

He designed it to be a massive commercial caravanserai where wealthy merchants could safely store and trade their goods. The market's name directly translates to "The Inn of Khalili."
