Egmont National Park

description Egmont National Park Overview

Egmont National Park is a protected area located in the Taranaki region of New Zealand's North Island. Established in 1900, the park is centered around Mount Taranaki, a dormant stratovolcano and the second-highest mountain in the North Island. The park is distinguished by its highly circular boundary, which was created by clearing surrounding native forest for agricultural use and is clearly visible from space. It offers a network of hiking tracks and protects diverse temperate rainforest ecosystems surrounding the volcanic cone.

help Egmont National Park FAQ

Why does Egmont National Park have an almost circular boundary?

Much of the boundary follows a radius around the summit of Mount Taranaki, producing the distinctive circle visible in satellite images. The contrast is especially sharp because protected forest sits inside the park while farmland surrounds much of it.

Can you climb Mount Taranaki without a guide?

Experienced hikers can attempt the summit independently, but the route is a demanding alpine climb rather than a normal walking track. Snow, ice, cloud, and fast weather changes can make the mountain dangerous even when conditions near the visitor centres appear calm.

What is the Pouakai Circuit, and how long does it take?

The Pouakai Circuit is a multi-day route through forest, wetlands, lava features, and the Pouakai Range. Many hikers complete it in two or three days, using Department of Conservation huts or designated campsites.

Are Mount Egmont and Mount Taranaki the same volcano?

Yes. Mount Taranaki and Mount Egmont are names used for the same stratovolcano, although Taranaki is now the commonly preferred name.
