Jericho Ancient City

Archaeological evidence at the site of Tell es-Sultan dates human occupation at Jericho back to the 9th millennium BCE, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the world. Remains of Pre-Pottery Neolithic walls and tower structures are among the earliest monumental architecture known.

Ancient Jericho is located in the Palestinian Territories near the Jordan River in the West Bank. The archaeological mound known as Tell es-Sultan sits just northwest of the modern city of Jericho.

Tell es-Sultan is the archaeological mound that contains the accumulated remains of successive settlements at Jericho stretching back thousands of years. Major excavations by Kathleen Kenyon in the 1950s revealed evidence of some of the earliest fortifications and agricultural communities in human history.

British archaeologist Kathleen Kenyon conducted the most significant modern excavations at Tell es-Sultan during the 1950s, refining stratigraphic techniques that became standard in Near Eastern archaeology. Earlier excavations were carried out by the Austrian-German team of Ernst Sellin and Carl Watzinger between 1907 and 1911.
