Sigurd Stefánsson

Sigurd Stefánsson was a late 16th-century Icelandic teacher and cartographer. He lived during a time when Iceland was under Danish rule and was highly educated for his era. He is most famous for his contributions to early geographical knowledge of the North Atlantic.

He is best known for creating the Skálholt Map around the year 1570. It is one of the earliest detailed cartographic depictions of the North Atlantic region. The map provided crucial geographical context for the Norse sagas detailing voyages to Greenland and Vinland.

The Skálholt Map is incredibly significant because it accurately plots out the locations of Iceland, Greenland, and the legendary Vinland. It served as physical proof that 16th-century scholars still possessed knowledge of the Norse voyages to North America. It helped later historians locate the actual Viking settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows in Canada.

He created the map while working as a teacher at the Skálholt school in southern Iceland. Skálholt was one of the most important cultural and educational centers in Iceland at the time. The original map was unfortunately lost to a fire, but highly accurate copies survived.
