Felix Wankel was a German mechanical engineer and inventor best known for conceptualizing and developing the Wankel rotary engine. Unlike conventional piston engines, his design utilized a unique eccentric rotary mechanism to achieve pressure-driven combustion, which eliminated the need for reciprocating pistons. Although he received an early patent for the concept in 1929, the first fully functional prototype was not developed until the late 1950s in collaboration with the German automotive company NSU. His engine design was later utilized in various automobiles, most notably by Mazda, as well as in motorcycles and aircraft.
