description Fire Island Overview
An annual vacation among friends becomes a contemporary reworking of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice in Fire Island. The 2022 American romantic comedy takes place on Fire Island, New York, where attraction is complicated by judgments about status and belonging within gay social life. Joel Kim Booster wrote the screenplay and stars in the film, which Andrew Ahn directed. Its ensemble includes Bowen Yang and Conrad Ricamora, with Margaret Cho and Matt Rogers also appearing.
Produced by Searchlight Pictures and released on Hulu, the film received positive reviews for its witty writing and LGBTQ+ representation. Friendship remains central as romantic encounters expose class differences and assumptions about identity. It suits viewers interested in queer romantic comedy or modern Austen adaptations. The summer setting supports a playful tone, while the social friction gives the romance consequences beyond whether two people find each other attractive.
