help Ping Identity PingFederate FAQ

What is PingFederate used for?

PingFederate is an enterprise identity federation server used for single sign-on and trust between identity systems and applications. It supports standards such as SAML, OAuth, and OpenID Connect.

Can PingFederate connect on-premises and cloud applications?

Yes. It can act as an identity provider or service provider and connect applications across on-premises data centers, SaaS platforms, and partner environments. The design depends on which system is responsible for authentication and token issuance.

Does PingFederate provide multifactor authentication by itself?

PingFederate can participate in multifactor authentication flows, but the second factor may be supplied by PingID, another identity product, or an external authentication service. MFA therefore depends on the configured deployment rather than the federation server alone.

What replaced the old Ping Identity product branding?

PingFederate remains the name of the federation product, while Ping Identity became part of Thoma Bravo's portfolio after its acquisition in 2022. Current product packaging may be presented under the broader Ping Identity platform or ForgeRock-related organization.
