182 Elsa

description 182 Elsa Overview

182 Elsa is a numbered asteroid in the main belt, the broad zone of minor planets orbiting the Sun between Mars and Jupiter. Johann Palisa discovered it in 1878, as nineteenth-century observatories were identifying and cataloguing new small bodies. The asteroid's name comes from Elsa of Brabant, the female protagonist of Richard Wagner's opera Lohengrin, so its designation connects a planetary object with a figure from European musical drama.
