description 188 Menippe Overview

188 Menippe is a numbered minor planet in the main asteroid belt, the region of small bodies orbiting the Sun between Mars and Jupiter. Christian H. F. Peters discovered it in 1878, during the period when telescopic surveys were adding many asteroids to the catalogue.

Its name refers to Menippe, one of the daughters of the hunter Orion in Greek mythology, and therefore belongs to the tradition of giving early asteroids names drawn from classical stories.
