197 Arete is a main-belt asteroid orbiting between Mars and Jupiter, discovered by Johann Palisa on 21 May 1879. It is an S-type asteroid, a rocky spectral class, and its orbit carries it from roughly 2.29 to 3.19 astronomical units from the Sun in about 4.5 years.
