description 80 Sappho Overview

80 Sappho is an S-type, stony asteroid orbiting in the inner part of the main asteroid belt. Norman Robert Pogson discovered it on 2 May 1864 at the Madras Observatory in India. It takes about 3.48 years to orbit the Sun, and its orbital plane is inclined about 8.68 degrees to the ecliptic. The asteroid is named after Sappho, the ancient Greek lyric poet from the island of Lesbos, and its silicate classification distinguishes it from carbonaceous C-type bodies.
