Achel Abbey

description Achel Abbey Overview

Achel Abbey (Abdij der Trappisten van Achel, or Sint-Benedictusabdij) is a Trappist monastery located in Hamont-Achel in the Belgian province of Limburg, with monastic origins dating to the 17th century and its current Trappist community established in 1846. The abbey was historically known for brewing Achel beers under the International Trappist Association's authentic Trappist product label, producing blond, brown, and higher-alcohol Trappist ales. The brewery ceased production in 2021 following the departure of the last resident monks, ending its status as an active Trappist brewing operation.
