Acrida conica

Acrida conica is a large grasshopper in the family Acrididae, associated with the elongated, cone-shaped head suggested by its species name. Its body can blend into grasses and dry vegetation, so size alone is not enough for identification.

The species was first described by the Swedish entomologist Charles De Geer in the eighteenth century. Acrida conica is therefore an established historical species name, not a recent discovery.

It is cataloged as a grasshopper species in the family Acrididae. The name Acrida conica by itself does not identify it as one of the famous swarming locust species.

Acrida conica identifies one species, while the everyday word grasshopper covers many different insects. Recording the genus, species, and family Acrididae is more useful than relying only on a casual color description.
