description African Bullfrog Overview
The African Bullfrog (Pyxicephalus adspersus), also known as the pixie frog, is a large burrowing amphibian native to sub-Saharan Africa. Males can reach snout-to-vent lengths exceeding 20 cm and weigh over 2 kg, making them among the largest anurans on the continent. They are ambush predators that consume insects, small rodents, reptiles, and other amphibians, and during dry periods they estivate underground in a mucous cocoon. Males are notable for their parental care, guarding tadpoles from predators and digging channels to connect isolated pools so tadpoles can reach deeper water.

help African Bullfrog FAQ
How large can a male African bullfrog become?
Male Pyxicephalus adspersus can exceed 2 kilograms and are much larger than females. The pronounced size difference is unusual because females are the larger sex in many other frog species.
Why do male African bullfrogs guard tadpoles?
A male may defend a breeding pool against birds, reptiles, and other predators after the eggs hatch. He can also dig channels that allow stranded tadpoles to reach a larger body of water.
How does an African bullfrog survive the dry season?
It burrows underground and enters a dormant state called estivation. Layers of shed skin can form a protective cocoon that reduces water loss until seasonal rains return.
Do African bullfrogs have teeth or a dangerous bite?
They possess tooth-like bony projections called odontoids on the lower jaw. A defensive adult can deliver a painful bite, so captive animals should not be handled casually.
