Ajanta Caves

The Ajanta Caves are universally celebrated for their breathtaking ancient murals, frescoes, and intricate rock-cut sculptures. These artworks primarily depict the Jataka tales, which are stories about the previous lives of the Buddha. They represent some of the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art.

The caves were built in two distinct phases, with the earliest group dating back to the 2nd century BCE. The second, larger phase of construction occurred during the 5th century CE under the Vakataka dynasty. The site represents a span of over 700 years of continuous artistic evolution.

The Ajanta Caves are located in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state in India. They are situated in a horseshoe-shaped gorge along the Waghur River. The surrounding dense forests helped keep the caves hidden from the outside world for centuries.

The caves were built by ancient Buddhist monks and artisans who were sponsored by wealthy patrons, including the Satavahana dynasty and later the Vakataka dynasty. The later phase of construction was heavily funded by Emperor Harishena of the Vakataka dynasty. They were intended to serve as secluded monsoon retreats for Buddhist monks.
