Akrotiri (Santorini)

Akrotiri was a highly developed Minoan Bronze Age settlement located on the Greek island of Santorini. It was heavily influenced by the Minoan civilization centered on the nearby island of Crete.

The city was remarkably preserved under thick layers of volcanic ash during the Theran eruption, which occurred sometime between 1620 and 1600 BCE. Similar to Pompeii, the ash hardened and protected multi-story buildings and intricate frescoes for millennia.

Systematic excavations have uncovered beautifully preserved two- and three-story buildings, elaborate drainage systems, and stunning frescoes depicting daily life and nature. Interestingly, no human remains have been found, suggesting the population evacuated before the volcano erupted.

Many historians and archaeologists theorize that the sudden destruction of Akrotiri by the Theran eruption inspired Plato's legend of the lost city of Atlantis. The advanced architecture and sudden collapse of the Minoan settlement fit several elements of the mythical story.
