description Albrechtsburg Overview
Albrechtsburg is a late Gothic castle overlooking the Elbe River in Meissen, Saxony, Germany. Built from 1471 under master builder Arnold von Westfalen for the Wettin rulers Ernest and Albert, it was conceived as a prestigious residence rather than primarily as a defensive fortress. Its innovative vaulted interiors and spatial planning influenced later architecture. From 1710, the castle housed the Meissen porcelain manufactory until production moved elsewhere in the 19th century.
