Alejandro Malaspina

description Alejandro Malaspina Overview

Alessandro Malaspina (1754–1810), known in Spanish as Alejandro Malaspina, was an Italian-born naval officer and explorer who served in the Spanish Navy and led a major scientific expedition between 1789 and 1794. The Malaspina Expedition sailed across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans with the goal of conducting scientific research, including the production of detailed maps and surveys of the Pacific coast of the Americas. Despite his achievements, he was later arrested for political reasons upon his return to Spain. His expedition is recognized as one of the most important scientific voyages of the Enlightenment era.

help Alejandro Malaspina FAQ

Which ships did Alejandro Malaspina command on his Pacific expedition?

The expedition sailed in the corvettes Descubierta and Atrevida, commanded by Malaspina and José de Bustamante y Guerra. Their names echoed James Cook's ships Discovery and Resolution.

Did the Malaspina expedition actually sail around the world?

No, although conceived as a global scientific voyage, its route was not a complete circumnavigation. Between 1789 and 1794 it surveyed Spanish America, reached Alaska, and continued across the Pacific to places including the Philippines, New Zealand, and Australia before returning to Cádiz.

What was Malaspina searching for in Alaska?

The expedition examined the northwest coast and investigated reports of a navigable passage connecting the Pacific and Atlantic. Its survey around Yakutat Bay helped reject claims that a major Northwest Passage began there.

Why were the Malaspina expedition's results not published promptly?

After returning to Spain, Malaspina became involved in political conflict with Manuel Godoy and was imprisoned. Much of the expedition's mapping, natural-history work, and political reporting was consequently suppressed for years.
